Hockey Visor: The Definitive Guide for Importers

Today I am going to show you how to buy the best hockey visor.

Honestly, hockey can be a dangerous sport without the necessary safety gear.

The best part?

I am going to offer you a permanent and practical solution – but how?

You’re going to learn everything about best hockey visors – from why you need it, best material, technologies, installation process, top brands, regulations and much more.

By the end of it all, you’ll be an expert in buying the best hockey visors.

Chapter 1: What is Hockey Visor

Let’s get straight to the point;

A hockey visor also known as a face shield is a piece of transparent or semi-transparent material that you can fit at the front of hockey helmet.

As you can see, the hockey helmet visor protects the face from external injury.

I will discuss more of that later in chapter 2.

Most of these visors are made from special material (mostly plastic).

Therefore, they can withstand high impact – or let me say virtually unbreakable.

What’s more?

You can as well incorporate other coating technologies on the surface of these hockey visors.

Basically, this improves the performance of the hockey visor.

Depending on their designs, hockey visor may cover the entire face or just a section of it.

Normally, the hockey helmet visors come in different shapes and designs.

This will depend on the manufacturer or brand.

Later in this guide, I will review some the top hockey visor brands on the market.

Now, let’s go ahead and focus on why you need helmet hockey visor.

Chapter 2: Why You Need Hockey Visor for Your Helmet

Any time you’re playing hockey, there are two things you MUST consider:

One – visibility, that is, your ability to see both the opponent and the ball.

And two, to protect yourself from possible injuries.

Of course, following hockey rules and regulations will help you achieve these two.

Now, back to the fundamental question.

Why do you need a hockey visor?

· To Guarantee Safety when Playing Hockey

A hockey visor is that face shield or tough plastic “in front” of the helmet.

Its main purpose is to protect the face from possible injuries.

Most hockey visors are made from high impact resistant plastic.

I mean, even if some hits you with the ball or hockey stick, you will not get hurt.

Remember, some injuries are so serious to an extent that they end up causing permanent disability.

In worse cases, they lead to death.

Even if the ball happens to hit your face, it absorbs the shock, hence, you will not get hurt.

Normally, they cover the uppermost part of the face.

You don’t have to worry about the weight – hockey visor material is lightweight.

You will learn more about this in chapter 2.

Simply put:

A hockey visor, will act as a shield, or barrier.

Therefore, it will protect your face from any injuries while playing.

· Improves Visibility

Without hockey visor, you’re likely to strain while playing hockey.

In fact, the bright light, dust or wind will obviously distract you.

This will make you feel uncomfortable, hence, you will not focus on the game.

But, how does the hockey visor improve visibility?

I know it is probably one of the main questions you’re asking yourself right now.

Hockey visors come with many technologies that make it:

  • Fog resistant
  • Scratch resistant
  • Glare resistant
  • Possess self-cleaning properties, etc.

I will take you through all these hockey visors technologies later in chapter 4 – keep reading.

In short, the technologies will improve visibility.

They will make it an optical class 1 surface.

Implying – you will see your opponents, goal posts, ball, and many more clearly.

Basically, you will enjoy playing hockey.

In addition to these, the design of hockey visors matters a lot.

Some offer a better peripheral view.

That’s a plus since you’ll have a wide view.

Is that not what every hockey player wishes to have?

Furthermore, you may also have a hockey helmet visor simply to look stylish or fashionable.

Of course, I consider this is a secondary purpose.

But, let me sum it all up.

You need a high quality hockey visor for safety and to improve vision.

Again, you cannot get all these when you choose a low quality material.

And, that now takes me to even an advanced stage of my discussion here.

What is the best material for a hockey visor?

Let’s find out.

Chapter 3: Hockey Visor Material

I have seen many players buy hockey visors without evaluating the material.

Let me warn you.

Do you know if the helmet hockey visor brakes, then it will harm you?

You will have cuts all over your face.

I don’t want you to go through that pain.

Therefore, you must buy a hockey helmet visor which is safe.

The question is:

Which is the best material for hockey helmet visors?

The best hockey helmet visors are made from polycarbonate (PC) material.

A polycarbonate is a transparent amorphous thermoplastic.

Therefore, the hockey helmet visor manufacturer, will use appropriate processes to fabricate and machining polycarbonate sheet into a suitable material.

I will tell you more about that before concluding this chapter.

WeeTect Hockey Visor

Polycarbonate hockey visor

So, let’s find out what’s unique about helmet visors made from polycarbonate material.

 3.1. Polycarbonate Hockey Visors

Typically, polycarbonate is the most popular material for making hockey visors.

You can shape it into virtually any shape.

And, more importantly, it has some of the best mechanical, optical and chemical properties.

Take a look at this data sheet if you think I am lying to you:

Properties of Polycarbonate Sheet

 Properties of polycarbonate sheet

I will take you through some of its properties that are critical for helmet visors:

· Better Light Transmission

A clear polycarbonate transmits over 97% of light.

Therefore, all hockey players will see opponents, the ball and goal posts clearly.

Also, it will make it easier to focus on the game.

Besides, they will not strain at all.

· High Impact Resistance

Isn’t this what every hockey player is looking for?

Assuming you have a hockey helmet visor made of glass – what do you think will happen?

When hit, it will break into very small particles that may enter your eyes, besides causing deep cuts in your skin.

Remember, the broken pieces may cut other players.

The good news?

Polycarbonate sheet is impact resistant – it is virtually unbreakable.

Honestly, it will require unimaginable force or impact to break it.

Even so, it will not break into smaller particles that can either cut or enter your eye.

You see what I am talking about?

That is the safety a hockey player deserves!

· Easy to Add Other Technologies to Improve Vision

Let me tell you the truth – there is no material that is 100% perfect.

However, the beauty of polycarbonate hockey helmet visors is that you can modify their performance.

What do I mean by this?

Whether you want clear, tinted or mirrored, it’s all possible with polycarbonate material.

Now, what options do you have?

You can add other technologies such as anti-scratch coating, anti-UV coating, anti-fog coating, anti-reflective coating and many more.

It will depend on what you want and how you want the polycarbonate helmet visor for hockey to look like.

· Polycarbonate Hockey Helmet Visors are Lightweight

Can you imagine hanging a heavy load on your forehead?

Does it look even practical?

Well, it’s not – that’s why you need a lightweight material for your hockey helmet visors.

That makes polycarbonate material a perfect choice for hockey visors due to its lightweight.

In fact, you will not even feel the weight of the polycarbonate helmet visor.

This will give you the opportunity to focus on the game.

· Polycarbonate Material is Easy to Clean

We all know how messy playing hockey can be more so during the rainy season.

You may end up cleaning your helmet visor every day.

That should not discourage you.

Polycarbonate visors may feature a hydrophobic coating.

This coating gives the visor its “self-cleaning” property.

That is dirt will fall off the visor surface by itself, thereby reducing the frequency of cleaning the visor.

So:

It’s only polycarbonate material that is suitable for hockey helmet visors.

This is due to its excellent properties.

Besides, you can easily modify or improve its performance by adding different technologies.

Now, how do you shape polycarbonate sheet to form a hockey helmet visor?

3.2. Injection Molding Helmet Hockey Visor

Whenever you’re shopping for these accessories, you will find manufacturer using the term – injection molded helmet visor.

So, what does it mean?

Well, this refers to the process of shaping polycarbonate sheet to the right shape and size of the hockey helmet visor.

Honestly, injection molding is a complex process.

Therefore, I will not go into its finer details – it is beyond the scope of this buying guide.

Simply put:

It is a technique where you force molten polycarbonate into a mold.

Normally, this mould takes the shape of the hockey helmet visor you want to produce.

The good thing about injection molding helmet visors is that:

  • Producing complex parts is easier
  • It’s a perfect choice for mass production due to better repeatability
  • Allows for design flexibility thus, you can manipulate polycarbonate sheet to any design
  • Parts have tight tolerances

Also, the process of injection molding helmet visors is very simple and straight forward:

  • Feed small pieces of polycarbonate into the heating chamber
  • Heat as you mix the material to a suitable temperature
  • Force the molten polycarbonate material into a mold
  • Allow it to cool and harden, then remove the part from the mold

Voila! You have your injection molded helmet visor.

In a nutshell, polycarbonate sheet is a perfect material for making hockey helmet visors.

And, the most common fabrication process is injection molding.

Are we together up that point?

Good, let’s get to another important section.

You can’t just miss this if you want to fabricate polycarbonate hockey helmet visor.

Chapter 4: Hockey Helmet Visor Technologies (Optical Coating Technologies that Improve Vision)

Now, this should arguably be one of the most exciting sections of this particular guide.

You know why?

Because it provides pertinent information on how hockey visors integrate with other technologies to offer high efficiency.

So without taking much of your time, let’s head straightaway and describe these optical technologies one by one:

4.1. Tinted Hockey Visor ( A Point to Note: In Som Cases IIHF Prohibit this)

It is one of the best techniques for this particular face shield accessory.

In fact for the modern game, a tint adds more value because it gives you as the player a significant advantage.

But first let’s understand what it entails:

It is basically a shade that you incorporate on a hockey visor through injection molding.

This is an industrial process that quite often takes place in high-tech manufacturer’s laboratories.Clear vs, Tinted hockey helmet visor

Clear vs. tinted hockey helmet visor

The shades for hockey visor tints are wide-ranging.

You can get them in orange, dark brown, green, and many more.

It’s good because it gives you the fundamental liberty to select what suits you.

The primary essence of tint on a hockey visor is to reduce direct light getting into your eyes.

It also helps in enhancing the depth of perception.

So that you’ll finally have better vision when wearing this playing gear.

The main advantage of wearing a tinted hockey visor is that you are protected from dangerous UV light.

Exposure to the UV rays continuously can lead to conjunctivitis within a short period.

But the good news is that tinted visors can protect you from this element.

On the other hand, you are likely to have cataracts which can force you to end your playing career relatively early.

Most tinted hockey visors have an interior anti-fog coating and strategic vent locations.

This, therefore, implies that you won’t spend time defrosting them.

I know some worries might arise as to what happens in the event that this visor breaks.

Actually, you can replace the item without necessarily buying the entire cage.

So you end up saving a considerable amount of money.

Another essential element to note is that not all hockey leagues accept tinted visors.

Here is the truth:

The IIHF prohibits the use of these items in the field.

The good thing, however, is that you can use the tinted hockey visors when playing in the other leagues like the NHL.

What’s more?

When wearing tinted visors, it becomes easy for you to go past your opponents and score more goals.

You know why?

Because it becomes difficult for the opponents to read your moves since they cannot see your eyes.

4.2. Mirrored Hockey Visor

Most of the mirrored hockey visors still come with different shades of tint.

So, you do not have to worry about a number of things such as UV rays and excess light.

Mirrored visors block out the sun and any source that produces excess light like the floodlight bulbs.

It is an ideal technology that enhances the effectiveness of this particular equipment.

And if you play in high altitude regions, sandy areas or where snow is a common occurrence, then this visor suits you well.

Listen to me.

Playing hockey under such circumstances can be challenging, from the visibility perspective.

So you definitely require a kind of hockey visor that guarantees you better vision regardless.

Of course, mirrored visor leads the list.

Mirror hockey visor

 Mirrored hockey visor

Another good thing with mirrored visor is that most manufacturers integrate it with other coating technologies as well.

Something like chrome, anti-fog, anti-scratch resistance and so forth.

This alone guarantees exceptional visual clarity.

4.3. Abrasion Resistant Hockey Visor

Abrasion-resistant is also another ideal coating technology that you can consolidate with the hockey visor for suitable vision.

You see.

Your visor’s surface needs to be clear so that you can easily have better visibility.

Any slight marks arising from abrasion and scratches compromise the quality of this accessory.

So the abrasion resistant coating technology integrates with the ingredients of the visor to create a highly compact product that resists any form of abrasion.

Player with hockey helmet visor

Player with hockey helmet visor

In many occasions, this particular coating technology and many others occur is hi-tech company laboratories.

It is to ensure that all the properties are consolidated in an ideal manner that matches the specific standards.

Again, abrasion resistant coating technology is advantageous in several ways to this eye-product:

First of all, the process of integrating it is high-end such that you’re confident of obtaining quality and better vision when playing in them.

Also, this technology tends to be relatively affordable in as much as you also get enhanced visibility.

Furthermore, you can get a custom-made coating hence making it possible for you to obtain what you think suits you best.

4.4. Hockey Visor with Anti-fog Coating

I promised earlier in this guide to talk about the anti-fog coating.

Now, this is the time:

The truth is, any hockey visor that does not incorporate ingredients of anti-fog coatings is merely ineffective.

Let me explain to you why:

Hockey is a game that involves quite a lot of energy.

Moreover, the weather you can it under is also inevitable.

So you need a visor that will not form fog whenever you’re playing.

You can’t just keep on flipping your visor now and then to clear the mist it has form on the surface.

Is there even that time in the first place?

Therefore, a hockey visor with an anti-fog coating is unquestionably essential.

Anti-fog coating technology incorporates a principle of molecular interaction, which is what in a real sense makes the visor relatively safe.

Anti fog hockey visor

Fogs often form on the surface of the visor as water droplets.

Apparently, this is as a result of respiration and the prevailing climatic condition.

Now what anti-fog coating does is that it allows for reduction of surface tension of the water.

It follows that the water bubbles then spread into a thin transparent film.

The bubbles result from the surface tension which plays a significant role in holding the water molecules together.

Then ultimately, since the film is reasonably thin, it permits light to pass through.

This happens systematically such that a player does not experience any hindrance thus seeing clearly.

Hopefully, this aspect of anti-fog coating integration with hockey visor is now evident.

But before own to the next coating technology, let’s quickly rush through the advantages of the anti-fog coating;

· First, it prevents you from personal injuries as you play

You see, almost all hockey leagues have put it mandatory for players to put on necessary protective gears.

But some players often explain that their fogging visors often bar them from clear visibility.

And for that reason, they feel much comfortable without wearing the same.

I tell you this is risky.

You expose your entire facial surface to imminent injuries.

The solution is simple.

Just get hockey visors that have an anti-fog coating layer.

Of great importance, you’ll end up saving a considerable amount of money treating and curing the injury.

Additionally, you’ll also avoid wasting a lot of time watching from the terraces just because you can’t play.

· It Increases visibility when playing

Ideally, wearing a visor that is full of fog is not only frustrating but also risky.

You won’t be able to see clearly what is ahead of you.

When playing, fogging on your hockey visor helmet can lead to severe injuries or even death as a result of poor visibility.

Poor visibility hinders you from seeing where the puck is or the direction it is being played.

This may be fatal if it is directed towards you.

Depending on the temperature change and humidity of the field, fogging builds up slowly.

This may cause a false assumption that things are Ok only for you to realize later on that you cannot see clearly.

However, if your visor is anti-fog coated, you’re guaranteed of safety.

It is primarily because these treatments always prevent such fogging from building up.

The best part?

You can play without any difficulty in viewing people or the puck.

· It shields the plastic hence preventing it from wearing out faster

The anti-fog agents contain particles that are helpful in enhancing the durability of the surface of your helmet.

This becomes relevant when you use it with other coating technologies such as anti-scratch.

Often, the surface of the plastic helmet necessarily would come into contact with other objects which in turn will cause them to scratch.

This reduces their effectiveness which will reduce their durability.

Having an anti-fog coating on your visor helps in protecting the surfaces from such happenings.

The effect is that your hockey visor helmet will be able to last for a comparatively long time.

This will save you some money since it will take time for you to buy another visor.

· Your eyes won’t strain

During obscure visibility, you still want to play implying that your eyes will have to strain to see well.

It is this struggle that strains your eyes so much.

Repeated playing under such conditions will cause your nerve to get exhausted.

This will lead to you suffering from eye related problems

As a player, this is something you don’t wish it comes your way.

The good news?

You can prevent this from occurring.

Purchase visors that are coated with an anti-fog layer and you will have clear visibility.

It is also cost effective since it does not require much to purchase anti-fog coated hockey visors.

4.5. UV Resistant Hockey Visor

I’d also indicated earlier to talk more about this coating technology.

So here we go;

Technically, your body is exposed to harmful UV rays.

This at times can be dangerous and result in a wide range of skin ailments.

But when you’re playing hockey, it would be ideal also to protect your face from the UV rays exposure.

And it’s the reason you need to get a visor that integrates the components of UV resistant features.

Specifically, this technology is essential because you will not struggle too much while playing even under the scorching sun.

Consolidation of UV resistant features into the visor also occurs inside laboratories with high-end equipment.

4.6. Anti-scratch Hockey Visor

Anti-scratch hockey visors are primarily made up of microparticles which are naturally hard.

What this means is that at any particular moment, it is this hard coating that will be in direct contact with the external forces.

There are a variety of anti-scratch ingredients that are used.

The major ones used include zirconia, alumina nanoparticles, silica nanoparticles, etc.

Techniques used to form an anti-scratch surface for your hockey visor include spin, dip, flow, spray and roll coating among others.

Apparently, as popular optical coating technology, it would be essential to understanding some of its benefits.

Now, the most obvious benefit of an anti-scratch visor is that it protects the surface from inevitable scratches.

This is enough reason for you to invest in a high-quality anti-scratch coating.

However, the good news is that there are more benefits of having an anti-scratch visor helmet as I am going to illustrate to you.

· It guarantees superior optical clarity

Having an anti-scratch visor helmet prevents any possible distortion that tends to occur from elements such as scratches.

You realize that the anti-scratch properties help considerably in making sure that there’s maximum transmission of light.

· It enhances durability and safety of the hockey visor

Anti-scratch coating consists of hard microparticles.

It is thus difficult to scratch the hockey visor.

This is because, at any point, it protects the surface from possible damages.

Everyone expectedly would wish to have a durable hockey visor.

It’s one way that shows you get value for your money.

Also, it shows the quality is of a higher level.

· Helps in maintaining the value of your hockey visor

Anti-scratch technology technically prevents any form of scratches from forming on the surface of your visor regardless.

So at the end of it all, you will always realize that the surface of your gear remains flawless and shiny all the time irrespective of the how long it’s taken.

This is because of the protection it has from the anti-scratch coating.

· Ability to consolidate anti-scratch coating with other coating technologies

The best thing about an anti-scratch coat is that it can be used alongside other coating technologies such as anti-fog solution, tinting, etc.

The fact is that an anti-scratch coat can only offer limited benefits for your helmet visor.

Consolidating this with other coating technologies help achieve maximum safety and reliability.

· It comes in Different Grades and Performance

Anti-scratch is available in different grades and performance.

Nonetheless, it depends on the type of your hockey visor.

So you have to be particular when it comes to selecting the ideal one.

This allows you to customize it for unique applications.

4.7. Photochromic Hockey Visor

Here’s the truth:

Photochromic optical coating technology on hockey visors provides one of the best injection molded material surfaces.

Apparently, it is one of the best coating technologies for this type of optical product.

It provides ideal optical clarity which is essential in this game.

Another good thing that you also ought to note is the fact that this coating technology is compatible with wide-ranging technologies.

For instance, you can integrate it with anti-fogging and iridium coating among others.

Excitingly, this particular technology is more of convenient.

This is in the sense that you can only obtain a single piece of the anti-fog photochromic visor and use it in different conditions of light.

Moreover, in the long run, it is relatively affordable to acquire a visor with photochromic particles.

The endurance of high quality makes it possible for you to use it for as long as possible.

Also, this coating offers high-grade UV protection.

Its particles ensure that they bar the UV lights from getting into the skin.

The result is that you stay away from any diseases that are related to effects of UV radiation.

As I promised you, you can improve performance of your polycarbonate helmet visor easily.

All you need is the right technology.

Do you want to learn more about these technologies?

I have more resources for you:

Chapter 5: Hockey Visor Installation (Step-by-step Guide)

I know this is what you’ve been waiting for – how to install a hockey visor.

Here, I am going to give you hands-on experience on how to go about this process.

Something I love more about hockey visor is that you do not need to be an expert to install it.

Similarly, you don’t need to have in-depth knowledge to fix it.

Of course, all you need is a mere demonstration and you’ll be good to go.

You can do this even a few minutes into the game.

So, let me take you through the few steps that you need to follow when fixing this component on your hockey helmet.

But first, ensure you have all the right tools.

Besides, the setting should be ideal for the task.

What does this mean?

Essentially, the area should not contain any elements that might fall, scratch or cause damage to the visor, during and after installing.

Also, you must ensure that the tools you use are ideal for the task.

More importantly, when it gets to tighten the screws.

Also, remember, the process of installing helmet visor may vary slightly depending on the design and model.

Anyway, I want you to watch this video by CCM first:

By the way, some people would prefer fixing the visor on their helmet at the beginning of their build.

Then later, they would mask it off as a way of protecting it from the paint.

Personally, I feel like it’s an inappropriate approach.

It involves lots of work, particularly when you know too well that it is more likely to get dinged, ultimately.

Nevertheless, that’s just my opinion.

So let’s look at the step by step process which you can use to install this accessory on your hockey headgear;

· Step 1: Place the materials on a flat surface

Preferably, a bench or a table would be ideal.

The flat surface is suitable because I prevent you from struggling to fix the helmet.

Typically, when you’re installing this visor on a flat surface, it becomes easy to find the right angles as well as driving in the screws correctly.

Installing hockey visor

Figure 12 Installing Hockey Visor. Photo Credits CCM

Furthermore, it prevents the materials from rolling and falling down, which can cause unnecessary inconveniences during this entire process.

It is at this point that you should ensure you use a clean, soft fabric and recommended detergents to clean the helmet.

· Step 2: Create a visor template

This step gives you an idea of what to do when you start the actual installation.

It’s sort of a reflection of what to do and what the visor will look like upon finishing.

I recommend that you draw it using a paper on the outer sides of the bucket.

It looks comparatively neater this way.

The interior version is better because it gives you a reasonably accurate evaluation of the shape of the visor.

Moreover, you can as well clean up the lanes later on when you’re done with the entire process.

Tip:

After you’re done with the drawing template for you hockey visor, never throw or discard it.

Ensure that you keep it well so that next time you save time when in need of the same for future installs.

Another tip:

Go for visors made of easy-to-replace materials.

Most of them are easy to bend and also look appealing when on the helmet.

· Step 3: Cut out the template

Now that you’re done with drawing your template, it is time to cut it out and then use the cut out to trim away the visor.

This should give you the precise shape that will fit well into your helmet.

While at it, ensure that you use sharp tools for trimming the visor from the material.

The best way to achieve this is by leaving an allowance of few inches so that it becomes easy to trim to the exact size.

At this point, you need to test the visor and see whether or not it can fit well into space.

This will give you an idea of how it will mount on the helmet.

Also, it will allow you to make all the necessary last minute adjustments accordingly.

If you realize that the allowance, you left is a little bit more, warp it further using a sharper object until it fits well.

· Step 4: Fit the visor into the helmet

We have different ways of doing this depending on the type of helmet and visor.

Some use adhesives whereas others use screws.

In this case, I will show you how to fit the visor using a screw given that the screw-type is the most popular among many players.

Fitting visor to helmet

Now, after fixing and aligning the visor into the helmet, set the screws so that they can get into the holes of the helmet.

Also, ensure that all the holes align with the screws before you start tightening them.

Start by inserting the screw into one side of this particular accessory.

Use a screwdriver with flathead to drive in the screws to the helmet.

However, make sure that you do not tighten it excessively.

It can break or render the visor surface at risk or crack.

I understand the zeal can be too much and you can be carried away as you tighten the screw.

Extra tip:

If you’re using an adhesive, first, make sure that it has dried quickly and also attaches the items strongly.

Nonetheless, you should always wear protective gear to avoid any unfortunate event of the glue stick on your fingers.

· Step 5: Align the visor with the helmet

To get the ideal placement, ensure that you adjust the visor by pushing it forward and or backward.

It is often suitable to do this while wearing the helmet.

The essence is to find the ideal position which you feel really comfortable in.

This is even when a hard puck flies towards you, but you’re still not hurt.

· Step 6: Tighten other screws

Once you’re satisfied with the alignment of the visor on the helmet, it’s now time to tighten the screws.

Given that this kind of visor usually come with various sets of screws, now is the right time to drive the rest into the helmet.

Tighten Screws

Tighten screws – Photo Credits: CCM

Do this from both the opposite ends by driving the appropriate visor tightly in the respective holes.

· Step 7: Attach the other remaining set of screws

Now that probably every part is in order, you can simply drive in all the remaining screws into the helmet.

The essence here is to tighten attach the visor on the helmet much stronger.

Doing this enables the visor to be stable such that it does not fall or even become loose after collisions or after being hit by an object.

Listen.

This process is as simple as that. You don’t need to be a professional.

In fact, this is a DIY project that you should be doing quite often, anytime you feel like changing your hockey visors.

Unfortunately, though, some people tend to install this accessory wrongly.

I have seen it on several occasions.

You should never mount the visor upside down at any point.

Hopefully, these steps, if you follow them, you will fix your hockey visor comfortably.

Having known that, let’s now move on to the next chapter and see the visor hockey brands available on the market.

Chapter 6: Top Hockey Visor Brands in the Market

One thing we can never pretend about or run away from is the fact that hockey visor brands are several in the market.

That’s the plain truth.

Next, we are looking at the regulations that guide several aspects of hockey visors.

It’s also an interesting section, so just scroll down.

Chapter 7: Hockey Visor Rules and Regulations

Just like any other game, when you are playing hockey, you need to abide by certain set rules and regulations.

The Hockey Association has different leagues.

So it is natural that different rules that govern hockey visors depend on the league that you are playing for.

To understand this better, let us look at how various rules and regulations govern the use of visor in different leagues across the board.

7.1. National Hockey League Visor Rules

This league, commonly known as the NHL is the top hockey league.

It is the summit league for all top-tier teams in America.

It shows that most of its rules and regulations also affect the other lower-tier leagues in one way or the other.

So when it comes to visor rule in the NHL, several factors are in place.

NHL

NHL

First is that the rules governing the use of visor in this league were first implemented in the 2013-2014 season.

Here are some of these guiding principles;

  • Any player with less than 25 NHL games appearances must wear a visor. And is also mandatory that you fix the visor properly on the helmet.
  • Every player wearing the visors must ensure that they fix the helmet appropriately in a certain way that guarantees full facial protection.
  • The match officials are under instructions to stop the game or remove any player that wears the visor incorrectly during the game.
  • On the same note, the player is only allowed back to the field after fixing their visors correctly. The match officials must confirm this before readmitting the player back in the field.
  • A hefty penalty is imposed on any player who still violates the visor rule upon returning from the first warning.

7.2. International Ice Hockey Federation Visor Rules

This federation commonly known as IIHF is different from the one that governs the NHL.

Actually, the Ice Hockey Federation is an overseer of the ice hockey, which is independent and different from the NHL

So ordinarily, the rules governing the NHL differ quite considerably from the ones that govern IIHF.

Therefore, for you to play in these two leagues, it’s fundamental to understand the rules.

IIHF

IIHF

In this case, let me take you through the visor rules in the IIHF.

  • As a player, you must attach your visor on the helmet. And that is not enough as it is also a requirement for the visor to extend downwards. The essence here is to shield the eyes and the lower sections of your nose from a lateral and frontal angle.
  • Any county association which owes allegiance to IIHF, and takes part in any or all IIHF affiliated championships, have to equip their players with a helmet.

It is also a requirement that the particular helmet must be specifically designed for ice hockey only.

The visor cage must also be attached to the helmet properly.

  • It is mandatory for all female players to unconditionally put on a helmet that has a visor or a cage.
  • Male players, on the other hand, can play without a visor or caged helmet with the exception of those born after December 31, 1974.
  • No player is allowed to put on any type of tinted or coloured visor during any competitive match.
  • In the event that your visor or cage cracks/breaks during the game, you are allowed to complete your shift.

However, upon leaving the ice, it is mandatory that you replace or repair the visor or cage before admitted back to the game.

7.3. Hockey Equipment Certification Council Visor Rules

Commonly known as the HECC, this is an overall body that approves and regulates all types of visors, cages, and helmets that players use in hockey.

It also has the mandate to provide labels which signify that its authorization to manufacturers to produce certified visors and other related equipment.

HECC

HECC

Some of the rules that this particular authorizing body imposes on hockey visors include the following;

  • Any specific hockey visor irrespective of the manufacturer must have a valid HECC official sticker.

Upon the expiry of the HECC sticker, the respective visor becomes null invalid and unsafe for players.

  • At no point should the HECC provide replacement labels for any visor.

The labels last for a substantial period but in any case, they wear out before the expiry date, they’re rendered invalid.

The assumption, in this case, is that any action that might lead to wearing out of the labels is considered misuse

  • A player is only allowed to play on any visor, if the manufacturing date is on the visor is not more than seven years from the date of play.
  • In any event that the sticker date or that of the manufacturer on the visor or inside the helmet is legible, then the accessory is no longer HECC certified.

In a nutshell, whenever you’re buying any hockey helmet visor, you must pay attention to this.
